Theme songs/lyrics/intros of
UK TV programmes 1955–1990

Dad’s Army

MusicWho do you think you’re kidding, Mr Hitler,
If you think we’re on the run?
We are the boys who will stop your little game,
We are the boys who will make you think again.

’Cos who do you think you’re kidding Mr Hitler,
If you think old England’s done?

Mr Brown goes off to town
On the 8:21,
But he comes home each evening
And he’s ready with his gun.

So watch out Mr Hitler,
You’ve met your match in us,
If you think you’ll push us.
We’re afraid you’ve missed the bus.

’Cos who do you think you’re kidding Mr Hitler,
If you think old England’s done?Music

Dangermouse (1981)

He’s the greatest, he’s fantastic,
Wherever there is danger he’ll be there,
He’s the ace, he’s amazing,
He’s the strongest, he’s the quickest, he’s the best,
Danger Mouse.

He’s terrific, he’s magnific,
He’s the greatest Secret Agent in the world,
Danger Mouse, Powerhouse,
He’s the fastest, he’s the greatest, he’s the best,
Danger Mouse,
Danger Mouse,
Danger Mouse.

Dastardly and Mutley in their Flying Machine, c.1970)

MusicMutley, you snickering, floppy-eared hound
When courage is needed, you’re never around!
Those medals you wear on your moth-eaten chest
Should be there for bungling at which you are best!
So, stop that pigeon –
Stop that pigeon
Stop that pigeon
Stop that pigeon
Stop that pigeon
Stop that pigeon
Stop that pigeon
How?!
Nab him – jab him – tab him –- grab him …
Stop that pigeon now!
You, silly – stop snickering, it’s not worth the chance
For you’ll be returned by the seat of your pants!
And clunk, you invent me a thingamabob
That catches that pigeon or I lose my job!
So, stop that pigeon –
Stop that pigeon
Stop that pigeon
Stop that pigeon
Stop that pigeon
Stop that pigeon
Stop that pigeon
How?!
Nab him – jab him – tab him – grab him …
Stop that pigeon now!Music

Davy Crockett

MusicBorn on a mountain top in Tennessee,
Greenest state in the land of the free,
Raised in the woods where he knew every tree,
Killed him a bear when he was only three.
Davy, Davy Crockett king of the wild frontier.Music

Dixon of Dock Green

After whistling the theme tune, “An Ordinary Copper” George Dixon always said:

“Good evenin’ all.”

He would then tell us a little about what happened “the other night” then there would be a fade to him walking the beat … and trying all the shop door handles.

At the end of each programme, Dixon would outline a moral for the story, finishing up with:

“’Night all.”

He would then whistle “Maybe it’s because I’m a Londoner “.

The following are the words to “An Ordinary Copper “, but these were not actually used on the TV programme:

I’m an ordinary copper who’s patrolling his beat.
Around Dock Green.
’Hello, Mister Dixon!’ shout the kids in the street,
Around Dock Green.
The C.I.D. are always in the headlines,
But I prefer the ordinary scene,
As an ordinary copper who’s patrolling his beat.
Around Dock Green.

The teddy boys’ ain’t partial to my company,
They don’t like all their capers to be seen,
By an ordinary copper who’s patrolling his beat
Around Dock Green.

Donald Duck

MusicWho’s got the sweetest disposition,
One guess, that’s who,
Who’d never, ever start an argument,
Who never shows a bit of temperament,
Who’s never wrong but always right,
Who’d never dream of starting a fight,
Who gets stuck with all the bad luck,
No-one but Donald Duck!Music

Double Deckers (1970: BBC)

MusicGet on board! Get on board! Come and join the Double Deckers.
Take a ticket for a journey on our double decker London bus.
Ring the bell (ding-ding), toot the horn (honk-honk).
When you ride with the Double Deckers,
Fun and laughter is what we’re after,
On our double, double, Double Decker bus!Music

Double your money (from 1955)

MusicDouble your money, and try to get rich,
Double your money, without any hitch,
Double your money, it’s your lucky day,
Double your money, and take it away.Music

Dr Kildare

MusicThree stars will shine tonight, one for the lonely
That star will shine its light each time that someone sighs
Three stars for all to see, one for young lovers
That star was made to be the sparkle in their eyes.

And, for the third star, only one reason
A star you can wish on to make dreams come true
High in the sky above, three stars are shining
I hope that star of love will shine down on you.

And, for the third star, only one reason
A star you can wish on to make dreams come true
High in the sky above, three stars are shining
I hope that star of love will shine down on you.Music

The Dukes of Hazzard (1979)

MusicJust two good old boys
Never meanin’ no harm
Beats all you ever saw
Been in trouble with the law
Since the day they was born
Straight’nin’ the curves
Flattenin’ the hills
Someday the mountain might get ’em
But the law never will.

Makin’ their way
The only way they know how
That’s just a little bit more
Than the law will allow.

Just two good ol’ boys
Wouldn’t change if they could
Fightin’ the system like
Two modern-day Robin Hoods.Music
