Crown & Thistle, Old Road, Headington

Crown & Thistle

Crown & Thistle today

The postcard above shows Old Road as it passes through Titup around the time of the First World War. The Crown & Thistle pub on the right was built in the mid-nineteenth century to replace Titup Hall, a seventeenth-century coaching inn.

The detached white house on the left of the picture (now numbered 109, but No. 49 until 1939) was a grocer’s shop froom 1921 to 1947 (run by Mrs Fred Ward until 1929 and Miss M. Kislingbury from 1930 to 1947).
