Windmill Road / Bateman Street, Headington

Junction of Windmill Road and Bateman Street

Junction of Windmill Road and Bateman Street today

The postcard above, looking north up Windmill Road with Bateman Street (then East Street) to the west, dates from around the time of the First World War.

The house on the right with the girl and cat outside is now a guest house, and had an extra storey added to it in 1992. The other houses look much as they do today, but the pavements are still not made up.

There is still a pillar box on the corner of Bateman Street, although it does not get emptied as often now: Kelly’s Directory for 1906 states that it was then cleared at 8.55am, 10.40am, 6.10pm, and 7.30pm on Mondays to Saturdays, and 2.40pm on Sundays.
