Headington pubs that have closed in recent years

Building still standing

  • The Crown & Thistle in Old Road closed in 2011
  • The Fairview Inn at 16 Glebelands closed in December 2013 after being sold by Enterprise Inns. Planning application 16/02112/FUL to convert it into a five-bedroom house was submitted in August 2016
  • The Princes’ Castle in Barton closed in the 1980s and is now a private house
  • The Shotover Arms at the Green Road roundabout was converted into a hotel in 1957, and has been a McDonalds since the early 1990s

Demolished

  • The Bell in Old High Street closed in 2000, and was demolished and replaced by a house in 2002
  • The Fox in North Way (the third Barton pub with this name) closed in 2002 and was replaced by housing
  • The Quarry Gate at 19 Wharton Road closed in 2012 and was demolished in April 2015. Planning application 16/00082/FUL to replace it with three five-bedroomed houses was refused
  • The Cavalier at 148 Copse Lane in Northway closed in 2010. This was demolished in April 2012 and replaced by “58 ensuite student rooms with shared facilities and warden’s room on three floors” (planning application by I & O Limited: 11/01681/FUL)
