New Marston: 1881 census

Left: Inscription on "Asurea Villa"
(or Blue Villa), the oldest house
in William Street
The date of 1877 gives clear evidence of when William Street started to be developed
New Marston was extremely small at the time of the 1881 census, and only 19 houses in all were occupied. It was divided thus to the north of the Cuckoo Lane/King’s Mill Lane boundary with St Clement’s parish :
- The east side of the Marston Road and the roads off it was in the parish of St Andrew’s Church, Headington (and remained so until 1963). There were six houses listed here in 1881. The first two were probably villas in William Street, while the other four were the more humble Tileworth Cottages
- The west side of the Marston Road and the roads off it was in the parish of Marston and was known as "Marston Gardens". There were thirteen occupied houses listed there in 1881 (four in Edgeway Road and nine in Ferry Road, including the old Somerset pub). Fourteen more houses were in the process of being built or waiting to be occupied.
