Mounting stones: Old Road, Wheatley

Mounting stone in Wheatley

This stone stands near the bottom of Shotover Hill
at the Wheatley side. Passengers in carriages for London
had to dismount and walk up the hill

This stone has a triangulation benchmark, presumably made when Britain was retriangulated between 1936 and 1953 rather than in the original 1783-1853 triangulation.
