Mileway stones: Headington Hill

Mileway on Headington Hill

In north wall of Headington Hill, just to the east of the bridge
Probably dating from 1729, and moved from the top
of the hill to this position in 1930

Grade II listed: 1485/743

WK and IF are probably the initials of William Kenton and Jeremiah Frankllin,
who were respectively Senior Bailiff and Mayor of Oxford in 1728/9

The Headington and London Roads did not exist until the 1780s, so this stone is marking the end of the route from Headington to the top of Headington Hill via Cuckoo Lane and the southern end of the present Pullen's Lane. It would have stood approximately one mile from the East Gate in Oxford.
