Inscriptions: Black Plaque, Prestwich Place


Prestwich Place

This plaque is on the north side of the Botley Road, near the entrance to Prestwich Place. It reads:

PRESTWICH
PLACE

JOSEPH PRESTWICH,
PROFESSOR OF GEOLOGY
WAS INFLUENTIAL IN
GAINING IMPROVEMENT TO
THE POOR DRAINAGE
OF NEW BOTLEY
IN THE 1880’S

Sir Joseph Prestwich (1812–1896) was an expert on water supply, and had published A Geological Inquiry Respecting the Water-Bearing Strata of the Country around London in 1851. He was Professor of Geology at Oxford from 1874 to 1888.
