Inscription on Rhodes House

This inscription over the main entrance to Rhodes House in South Parks Road shows a ship of state, with the British lion on the central sail and the American eagle on the right-hand one. The inscription underneath reads simply:

GOEDE HOOP

[Good Hope, the name of one of the five ships of the Dutchman
Jan Van Riebeeck who founded Cape Town]

Rhodes House was built in memory of Cecil Rhodes. It was designed by Sir Herbert Baker and opened in 1928.
