Inscriptions: Cuckoo Lane road sign
This stone in Cuckoo Lane, just to the west of Headley Way, is deemed to be a street sign, and reads:
CUCKOO LANE
This stone was dedicated on

in memory of
Marjorie and
Stanley Harris
The stone was commissioned from the Stile Company by by Ruth Harris of Brackley. When it was first put up, some local people thought that it resembled a tombstone and was out of place in this most rural part of Cuckoo Lane.
Highway officers allowed it to remain in place on the grounds that a street sign does not require planning permission; but any such road signs proposed for Oxford in future will have to go through the planning procedure.
