Inscriptions: Peace stone at Carfax

Peace stone at Carfax

The above peace stone is set in the north side of Carfax Tower, formerly part of St Martin’s Church. It proclaims the short-lived peace when Napoleon was imprisoned on Elba. It reads:

PEACE
was proclaimed
in the City of
OXFORD
June 27[?] 1814

There is a redundant explanatory stone below it:

Description of peace stone

THE STONE ABOVE
COMMEMORATES
THE PEACE OF
1814
