Inscriptions: Clarendon Building

Earl of Clarendon

High on the east side of the Clarendon Building is a statue of the Earl of Clarendon (1609–1674). (This used to stand more prominently in a niche at the front, facing Broad Street.) The inscription under the statue reads:

EDWARDVS COMES CLARENDONIAE
Summus Angliae Summus Academiae
Cancellarius

[Edward, Earl of Clarendon, a great Chancellor of England
and a great Chancellor of the University]
