Boundary stone
This boundary stone, in the front garden of 42 St Giles, reads:
HERE
ENDETH
NORTH
GATE
HUNDRED
It is a Grade II listed structure (ref. 1485/740)
Originally the Northgate Hundred appears to have comprised all the area outside the north gate of Oxford which was attached to Headington Manor and did not form part of Walton Manor. By the sixteenth century, however, the Northgate Hundred comprised just St Mary Magdalen Parish and a part of St Giles, and this stone near the north end of St Giles’ Street marks its northernmost boundary.
