St Aldate's: Bishop King's Palace
Bishop King's Palace in St Aldate's, now usually known as the Old Palace, houses the Roman Catholic Chaplaincy. It was named after Robert King, the first Bishop of Oxford, although there is no evidence that any bishop actually lived here.
The building was originally two houses. The brewer Thomas Smith bought the smaller one on the right in1621 and built the larger one on the left shortly afterwards, forming the pair into one of the biggest houses in Oxford.
The St Aldate's façade was reconstructed in the 1950s, and the property enlarged in 1970.
