Richard Howes
Mayor of Oxford 1489/90, 1490/1, and 1495/6
Richard Howes (or Hewys/Hewis/Hows/Howes/Howse/Huys) (d.1499) was elected Bailiff on the council in 1483 and Alderman in 1486. He was chosen as Mayor in 1489, 1490, and 1495.
In September 1498 he was recorded as failing to appear at the Chancellor’s Court to answer concerning a bond he had made.
Howes had died by 20 April 1499, when probate was granted on his will, and in August 1499 his sons, John and William Howes, administered his estate. They produced letters of administration in the Chancellor’s Court that were granted by the Archbishop of Canterbury because there were bona notabilia outside the University.
