William Herbefield
Mayor of Oxford 1432/3 and 1433/4
William Herbefield (or Herberfield) was elected Senior Bailiff on the council in 1426 and was an Alderman by 1428. He is likely to be related to the man of the same name who was an Alderman in 1407.
Herbefield was elected Member of Parliament for Oxford on 12 May 1432, and later that year was also elected Mayor. He continued as Mayor the following year.
Herbefield was chosen as one of the four Alderman in 1428, 1435, 1436, and 1437.
The Will of a William Herberfield was proved at the Prerogative Court at Canterbury in November 1455.
IIn 1448 a widow named Mrs Cecily Herbefield died, leaving a tenement in St Mary Magdalen parish to St Martin’s Church and augmenting Dame Margaret Northern’s coffer. It seems likely that she was his relation (perhaps his aunt or mother).
