Richard Sellwood

Mayor of Oxford 1346/7 and 1347/8

Richard Sellwood (or de Selewood/Selwode) (d.1349) was elected Senior Bailiff in 1339 and one of the four Aldermen in 1344. He was elected Mayor two years running, in 1347 and 1348

Sellwood died of the Black Death in May 1349. Anthony Wood reports how Sellwood left a messuage in St Edward’s Lane, "opposite to one of his messuages called Brokeneseild" which was to be sold and the money spent on work on Folly Bridge. Sellwood’s widow Sibyl remarried: her second husband was the Bailiff John Norton.
