Anthony Aylworth (1544–1619)

Anthony Aylworth (or Ayleworth or Ailworth or Alworth or Aleworthe) appears to have been born in 1544 in the parish of St Stephen's, Hackington, Canterbury, the son of John Aylworth (born 1516) and Elizabeth Ashton, who married at Canterbury in 1541.

Aylworth came to Oxford from London, and was a Fellow of New College from 1563 to 1582, obtaining his BA on 10 October 1566, his MA on 6 July 1570, his B.Med. on 8 March 1577/8, and his D.Med. on 5 July 1582.

Aylworth was licensed to practice medicine on 5 July 1582, and was immediately appointed Regius Professor of Medicine, a position he held until 1597. He was physician to Queen Elizabeth I.

Aylworth appears to have married a Miss Bagley, and they had two children: Martin and Anthony.

Aylworth died on 18 April 1619 and was buried in New College chapel.

The "Will of Anthony Aylworth, Doctor of Physic of Oxford" (date of probate 17 June 1619) was deposited at the Prerogative Court of Canterbury: ref PROB 11/133.

Aylworth's sons:

  • Martin Aylworth, born c.1592, was matriculated at the University of Oxford from Hart Hall on 16 June 1610, aged 18. He became a Fellow of All Souls College in 1611, obtaining his BCL on 22 November 1615 and his DCL on 27 November 1621. He died on 11 January 1657.
  • Anthony Aylworth junior married Catherine Page, daughter of Robert Page of Cowley. He died in 1659, and she died in 1663. Their son William Aylworth was bailiff of Oxford in 1670.
