13–20 Cornmarket (Northgate House)

In 1960 planning permission was granted to demolish the eight shops at 13–20 Cornmarket (plus 11–19 Market Street and the Crown & Thistle public house), and replace them with a new block for Marks & Spencer. Of the shops demolished, Nos. 13–17 Cornmarket were old buildings, but Nos. 18–20 were relatively new, having been built by Marks & Spencer in 1934–5.
The block shown above, known as Northgate House, was completed in 1963. Marks & Spencer only remained here, however, for thirteen years, and in 1976 swapped shops with the Co-op in Queen Street.
When the Co-op in Cornmarket closed down, the ground floor was divided up into separate shops.
