No. 20: Broad Canvas

No. 20 on the left is part of the same building as No. 19 on the right, and they are jointly Grade II listed (1485/180). They date from about 1700, but have been remodelled.
The 1851 census shows the printseller John Shrimpton living here with his wife, four young children, and a house servant.
In 1861, the building was occupied by William Benjamin Cunningham (described as a "manufacturer of fancy goods in wood"), his wife, and his son of the same name (described as a pianoforte tuner, stationer, & fancy warehouseman"), and their servant.
At the time of the 1881 census the house is occupied by James Coles (described as a printer & stationer employing two boys), with his wife and two little children and a general servant.
