World War I
and Headington

This card was sent at Christmas by members of the congregation of All Saints Church, Highfield to soldiers of that parish serving abroad in the First World War
Of the three Headington parishes, All Saints suffered the most losses (52). Although its population at the time was only two-thirds that of Holy Trinity (Quarry) and much the same as that of St Andrew’s (Old Headington), it encompassed the much newer Highfield / New Headington area which had a higher proportion of young families
Quarry lost 45 men and Old Headington 30, making a total of 127 Headington dead. As the total population of Headington in 1911 was only 5,351, this means that 2.37% its people (and therefore well over 10% of its young men) died fighting in the First World War
