- John Willoughby Tarleton Allen (1904–1979), Colonial educationist and Swahili scholar, lived at Halford House, 8 Boults Lane
- John Langshaw Austin (1911–1960), Philosopher, lived at Walnut Tree House
- Eric Robertson Dodds (1893–1979), Classical scholar, lived at Cromwell House, 17 Mill Lane
- Leslie Fox (1918–1992), Mathematician, lived at 2 Elsfield Road
- John Laker Harley (1911–1990), Botanist, lived at The Orchard, 12 Oxford Road
- Clement Charles Julian Webb (1865–1954), Theologian and philosopher of religion, lived at Walnut Tree Cottage from 1922 and served as Churchwarden at the Church of St Nicholas
