Cycle lanes in the Headington area: Marston
The cycle lanes on the Marston Road are a good example of how cycle lanes should be: cyclists are separated from both pedestrians and motor vehicles by a grass verge. And when the lane meets a junction, as shown below, the cyclist has right of way.
But even here things can go wrong: the picture below shows a tree that fell on a cycle path in the gales of the weekend of 1/2 April 2006 and was still lying there on Monday when this picture was taken. Obstacles on cycle lanes are a major problem and can be very dangerous, especially at night.
The cycle lane through the University Parks from Ferry Road to South Parks Road is a wonderful asset for Marston. Even here, however, there can be occasional natural hazards that motorists would never be expected to countenance. It is impossible to steer through steers …
… and cycling along a path that you cannot actually see because it is flooded can be very dangerous.
